The Tuesday press event in West Capitol Park was organized by the Institute for American Values, a Manhattan think-tank that has recently issued reports warning of the potential social costs from increased gambling addiction. "It felt great," said David Blankenhorn, the institute's president, who took the first whacks at the machine. "I've wanted to do this for a long time." The protest was modeled on a Depression-era episode in which New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia bashed illegal slot machines (which he called "mechanical pickpockets") before authorities dumped them in New York Harbor.
