With the publication of his book, The Future of Marriage, David Blankenhorn is modeling what the Institute for American Values does best: acting as a "catalyst for analysis and debate among those with differing views." (USA Today, March 14, 2007).

Not long after The Future of Marriage was published, Blankenhorn engaged Evan Wolfson, author of Why Marriage Matters: America, Equality, and Gay People's Right to Marry, in a civil conversation about same-sex marriage at Pace Law School. The event was later broadcast by CPSAN-2. (You can watch it here. Real Player needed.) Wolfson and Blankenhorn are now teaming up to bring their conversation to other speaking venues. (For more information, email Kendra Worsley at the Institute for American Values.)

Stanley Kurtz blogged about The Future of Marriage saying, "Blankenhorn’s overall case strikes me as powerful and persuasive. It should – and I suspect will – have a strong public impact."

At The Volokh Conspiracy, Dale Carpenter, Julius E. Davis Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota Law School and gay marriage proponent, posted two lengthy responses to Blankenhorn's Weekly Standard piece ("Defining Marriage Down," March 26, 2007). He remarks, "I have begun reading Blankenhorn’s book, The Future of Marriage. So far, I find it lively, engaging, subtle, interesting, happily free of jargon, and deeply wrong. It is probably the best single book yet written opposing gay marriage." At the Institute's own Family Scholars Blog, Blankenhorn responds to Carpenter — you can read the whole exchange here. The Chronicle of Higher Education also published a brief summary of the civil conversations.

Reviews of the book have appeared in Commentary (reviewed by Jonathan Kay) and National Review Online (reviewed by Robert P. George and Ryan T. Anderson). The Future of Marriage is also receiving attention internationally: read an interview with David Blankenhorn on the Australian-based, internet magazine, MercatorNet.
